Here are the answers to the most frequent questions:
What is The Basic Rider Course (BRC)? The curriculum has been developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to coach a new rider through the basics of riding and to break the bad habits of seasoned riders.
I don’t have a lot of experience can I take this class? Yes, however, please know that although this course is designed to be basic and for beginners it is not designed to teach you how to balance a motorcycle. You must be able to balance and ride a bicycle prior to your arrival.
I am under 18 can I still take this course? Yes. You must have your parent or guardian in person and present at the first training session.
I have been riding for years, is this course still right for me? Yes! Although some of the initial riding exercises may be a little slow for you, we constantly hear from students with years of experience say, “I’m so glad I took this course, not only did I learn a lot, I also broke a ton of bad habits! I wish I would have taken it years ago!”. It is a Basic course, but ensuring your basic skills are the best they can be only sets yourself up for a successful and safe riding future.
Do I need to own a motorcycle? No, you do not need to own a motorcycle all motorcycles will be provided.
Can I use my own motorcycle? No, you must use the motorcycles that we provide for you.
How long does the course take? The Basic Rider Course consists of an initial 5-hours in a self-paced online course and is followed by 2 half days of “On Motorcycle” training.
What is covered during The Basic Rider Course? First, we begin with online training (called the eCourse) where we’ll cover the basics including; operations, selecting riding gear, risk management and risk mitigation, street riding strategies and more. Then we’ll take what you’ve learned and put it to practical use on the range. On the range you’ll develop skills in shifting, accelerating, braking, cornering and lane changing through low-speed maneuvering, all in approximately 10 hours. Finally, you’ll take a riding test covering exactly what you’ve been taught throughout the previous exercises to wrap up the training.
What should I wear to class? Proper motorcycle riding gear is a Must: sturdy pants such as jeans without holes, footwear that covers your ankles, full finger gloves, long sleeve shirt or jacket, eye protection and of course your DOT Approved Helmet. Dress in layers and be prepared for all types of weather (including rain). Due to Health and Safety regulations we will not provide helmets.
What if the weather is bad? We do train in the rain. So, unless there are unsafe conditions, which are rare, class will go on as scheduled. Be prepared for hot, cold, wind, and rain. If it is safe to be on the range the class will continue as scheduled.
After this course do I have to take the test at the BMV? In Indiana, and through us, this course provides a waiver of the written and riding licensing tests. This means after completing this course you will be eligible to receive your endorsement without further testing. For students taking this course that are not Indiana residents check with your motor vehicle licensing agency for their specific requirements
